What is matte painting in photoshop – How to create

Matte painting is a technique of painting that involves the use of photographic images, often from photographs, to create two-dimensional or three-dimensional images.

The matte painting has been used for decades and it is still one of the most popular methods for creating digital paintings. A matte painting can be created by using a computer program like Photoshop or Gimp and then assembling the image layer by layer.

The process involves using a combination of digital painting and digital photography to create an image with a different background, often for artistic or creative purposes.

Matte painting can be used to create various effects, such as adding depth, dimensionality and light to an image.

A matte painting is a great way to add depth and realism to your photographs. It’s also a great way to create a mood or tell your story with just one image.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a matte painting in Photoshop. We’ll start by creating the base image and then adding the textures, lighting and color in post-production.

There are various ways to create matte paintings, but some of the most popular methods include:

1) Creating a scene in 3D space and then projecting it onto a 2D surface. This is often done on the computer using programs like Maya or 3ds Max.

2) Using photographs as textures and painting over them with oil paint. This can be done on the computer using programs like Photoshop or Painter.

3) Using computer-generated imagery, which can be created by modeling objects in 3D space, animating them, and rendering them into 2D images.

4) Using cutout illustrations as textures and painting over them with oil paint. This can be done on the computer using programs like Corel Painter or Photoshop Elements.

How to Create a Matte Painting in Photoshop

1) Create the Base Image

First, we’ll need an image that’s going to be our base for our matte painting. You can use any photo you like but it should have lots of detail so that you can easily see what’s going on with the textures and lighting later on in this tutorial.

2) Add the Texture

Next, we’ll need some textures for our matte painting so let’s open up Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 and create a new document (File > New). We’re going to make this document about 1000 x 1000 pixels so that it will be big enough for us to work with later on. Now, press Command and N (Ctrl + N) to create a new layer. Now that we have this new layer created, we’re going to use a texture that’s already been downloaded for you in the next step.

3) Download the Texture

You should now have 2 layers in your document-one with the texture and one without-but they don’t look quite right yet because they are both transparent and so they will just blend together into our black background. So, in order to make them look like they are on top of the black background, we’ll need to save our textures into this document so that they will be visible.

4) Save the Texture

Now, just go ahead and click on your texture layer then hold down Option when clicking File > Save As (Command + Shift + S). This will bring up the save options window where you can rename your file if you want and pick a folder for it. Once you have made these changes, save it in a folder that you’ll remember or create one just for textures.

5) Paint the Texture

Now, this is where it gets fun-we’re going to use whatever brush and color we want to paint our texture onto our document.

6) Save Your Image

Now that you’re done painting your new texture onto your black background layer, go ahead and click File > Save (Command + Shift + S). And now this new image should be saved in your working folder or a folder that you designated earlier!

7) Export Your Image: Now, this is a step that’s optional-if you want to export your image, go ahead and click File > Export. This will bring up the save options window where you can change the file format for your image before exporting it.
