- A weakening of the muscle of the heart
- Coronary artery disease
- Heart valve disease
- Any sort of congenital heart defect
- Dangerous recurring abnormal heart rhythms that are not controlled by other treatments
- Failure of any previous heart transplant.
In children, the cause of heart failure is either cardiomyopathy or any congenital heart defect.
The process of getting a heart transplant:
In order to get a heart transplant in India, you are first placed on a transplant list. However, prior to your placement on the list, you must undergo a careful screening process. A team of heart doctors and nurses review your medical history which is further followed by various diagnostic tests. Once approved, you would require a donor who would donate a heart to you. A supportive network of friends and family is needed to help you face this stressful time.
In the meantime, the health care team shall monitor you meticulously to keep your heart failure in control.
What happens during a heart transplant?
Once the heart of a donor becomes available, a surgeon from the transplant centre goes ahead to harvest the heart of the donor. This heart is then cooled and stored in a special solution during the time it is taken to the recipient. The surgeon then makes sure that the heart of the donor is in a healthy condition prior to beginning the process of transplant. The transplant surgery takes place as soon as possible, right after the heart becomes available.
During a heart transplant surgery, the patient is placed on a heart-lung machine which permits the body to receive important nutrients and oxygen from the blood even though the heart is being operated on.
Survival rate after heart transplant:
Approximately 85-90 percent of the heart transplant patients live well one year post their surgery and the annual death rate thereafter extends to approximate of 4 percent only. The three-year survival rate of transplant is 75 percent respectively.
The outcome of the patients who undergo heart transplantation for birth heart disease is similar to that of the patients who suffer from other forms of heart disease. The One-year survival rate in this situation is 79 percent and the five-year survival rate is 60 percent respectively. A Heart transplant in India has become a hassle-free process and it is treating a number of heart patients regularly.
Summary: A heart transplant surgery involves a procedure under which the diseased heart of a person is replaced with a donor’s healthy heart which is in a better healthier state. This procedure has a fair survival rate respectively.
